Identifying the true European ‘low-cost airports'

    Get PDF
This paper discusses the long-term effects of low-cost carrier (LCC) presence at European airports and identifies the airports that have benefited the most from LCC consolidation during the current century. The research uses ‘LCC Market Share’, in terms of seats, to measure the relative importance of LCCs within each airport; and introduces ‘EU LCA Rank’ as a normalised metric of the capacity share of every airport in the European low-cost segment. It evaluates the trends between 2001 and 2018 in a sample of the 300 largest European airports, by total seats in 2018, using OAG supply information (seats by carrier). Results highlight the role that LCCs have played in boosting the growth of airports, both primary and secondary, that were keen to appreciate the development of the low-cost segment earlier. Indeed, despite the fact that LCCs have put many airports on the European map, during the second half of the period of analysis growth has been more significant for major airports. In that sense, this paper contributes a better understanding of the recent dynamics in European LCCs choice of airports and, in particular, the long-term effects that this disruptive business model have had for airports

Preparation and characterization of α-Fe nanowires located inside double wall carbon nanotubes

Capillary effect was used to fill double wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNT) with iron. The samples are characterized by Mössbauer and Raman spectroscopies, TEM, SAED, and magnetization. The experimental results indicate the presence of a-Fe nanowires inside the DWCNTs. The samples are ferromagnetic at room temperature. There are three striking results due to the confinement effects on the physical behavior of a-Fe: the hyperfine fields increase, the Debye temperature decreases and Raman modes are observed

Applying genetic algorithm for hybrid job shop scheduling in a cosmetic industry

    Get PDF
This work considers the problem of scheduling a given set of jobs in a Flexible Job Shop in a cosmetic industry, located in Colombia, taking into account the natural complexity of the process and a lot of amount of variables involved, this problem is considered as NP-hard in the strong sense. Therefore, it is possible to find and optimal solution in a reasonable computational time for only small instances, which in general, does not reflect the industrial reality. For that reason, it is proposed the use of metaheuristics as an alternative approach in order to determine, with a low computational effort, the best assignment of jobs in order to minimize the number of tardy jobs. This optimization objective will allow to company to improve their customer service. A Genetic Algorithm (GA) is proposed. Computational experiments are carried out comparing the proposed approach versus instances of literature by Chiang and Fu. Results show the efficiency of our GA Algorithm

AbstractThis work is a descriptive analysis that aims to measure the characterization of the work environment, a situation that influences the behavior of workers, with the intention of potentiating the skills of the organizational psychologist at the favorable management of human resources of a mass consumer products company. The objective is to determine the way in which the work environment is affecting the level of satisfaction of the workers. It is intended to diagnose the levels in which the dimensions of the work environment on workers of the company are presented, through the use of standardized questionnaires OPS and S10/12, in order to determine the levels of leadership, motivation, reciprocity, participation and job satisfaction; applied to 102 workers of a mass consumer products company who work in the following departments: administration area, storehouse, warehouse and sales. The results show that the working environment is not completely satisfactory. The analysis detected that most variables, specially the one of the administration area, stands with the lowest average and all its sub-variables are presented as unsatisfactory
